DELHI, Oct 14 - The 19th Commonwealth Games came to a close in a flurry of competition that saw India overtake England to finish as runner-up to Australia in the medals table.

Australia's medal tally of 176 included 74 Golds.

India overtook England to finish runner-up when its Badminton players won Gold in the Women's Doubles and Women's Singles in Thursday's final competitions, taking its Gold medal tally to 38, one more than England.

Australia, which has topped the medals table in the past five Games, provided winners across every sport to lead India, which took advantage of its host national enthusiasm to make its best ever medal haul, and England.

India's 101 medals included 38 Golds.First time India won so many Gold medals in Common Wealth Games(CWG).

England, which topped the medals table at Edinburgh in 1986 and whose athletes were benefitting from the training programmes put in place for the London 2012 Olympic Games, won 142 medals, including 37 Gold, to finish third.

Australia also provided the stars of the Games in Alicia COUTTS, who took most Games Golds with five in Swimming, and Leisel JONES (AUS), who rewrote history by becoming the first swimmer to win two Golds in three consecutive Commonwealth Games and equalling Susie O'NEILL (AUS) and Ian THORPE (AUS) for the most individual titles, 10, in all Games.

Athletes competed in 272 Gold medal events in 17 sports - Archery, Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics, Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Rugby Sevens, Shooting, Squash, Table Tennis, Tennis, Weightlifting and Wrestling.

Fifteen events were contested in four Para Sports, for athletes with a disability, on the inclusive sports programme. These sports were Athletics, Swimming, Powerlifting and Table Tennis. Para Sports were first included in the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games.

It was the first time India hosted the Games and only the second time the event had been held in Asia, after Kuala Lumpur in 1998. Athletes from 71 countries and territories, including Rwanda, which only joined the Commonwealth in 2009, competed.

It was only the third time in 19 Games that the event has been held outside Australia, Canada, Great Britain or New Zealand. India’s only other major multi-sport event was the Asian Games, held in Delhi 1952 and 1982. Kuala Lumpur and, in 1966, Kingston, Jamaica, have been the only other Commonwealth Games hosts.

The 2014 Games will take place in Glasgow, Scotland.
